Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Tylenol Producers Over Autism Allegations

Courtroom Action
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump who is running for US Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding the risks of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, alleging the firms hid safety concerns that the pain reliever created to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action arrives four weeks after President Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between using acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in offspring.

The attorney general is filing suit against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the medication, the only pain reliever recommended for pregnant women, and the current manufacturer, which presently makes it.

In a declaration, he claimed they "deceived the public by gaining financially from pain and promoting medication regardless of the risks."

The manufacturer states there is insufficient reliable data linking acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations lied for decades, knowingly endangering numerous people to boost earnings," the attorney general, from the Republican party, said.

Kenvue stated officially that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the safety of paracetamol and the potential impact that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also stated it had "consistently assessed the relevant science and there is no credible data that shows a verified association between consuming paracetamol and autism."

Groups speaking for doctors and medical practitioners share this view.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has declared acetaminophen - the key substance in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for pregnant women to treat discomfort and elevated temperature, which can present major wellness concerns if left untreated.

"In multiple decades of studies on the utilization of acetaminophen in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has conclusively proven that the usage of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation causes neurological conditions in offspring," the organization commented.

This legal action cites latest statements from the former administration in claiming the medication is reportedly hazardous.

Last month, the former president raised alarms from medical authorities when he advised pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to use Tylenol when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then published an announcement that medical professionals should consider limiting the usage of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in young ones has not been established.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who oversees the FDA, had pledged in April to initiate "comprehensive study program" that would identify the origin of autism in a matter of months.

But experts warned that discovering a unique factor of autism - considered by experts to be the result of a complex mix of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of permanent neurological difference and disability that influences how individuals perceive and interact with the surroundings, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is running for the Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the research" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action aims to force the firms "remove any promotional materials" that states Tylenol is reliable for expectant mothers.

The court case mirrors the complaints of a group of mothers and fathers of minors with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the makers of Tylenol in recently.

A federal judge rejected the lawsuit, saying studies from the plaintiffs' authorities was inconclusive.
